Why you should choose Quam®

Interfaces of  Quam®

In the context of projects, data is regularly generated which must be processed in the project but kept in surrounding systems or - vice versa - data which is generated in the project but must be transferred to other systems.

Examples of this are, for example:

  • Time recording data that are recorded in an existing time recording system and are to be processed in the Quam to compare the target and actual times of individual work packages, or

  • Cost data that is entered via existing purchasing processes, e.g. in an SAP system, and subsequently has to be transferred to individual projects or work packages in projects for cost comparison.

With its Microsoft SharePoint foundation, Quam® is easier to integrate with existing applications than many other systems. With Business Connectivity Services, SharePoint has a centralized infrastructure that supports data integration solutions. With Business Connectivity Services, SharePoint can be used as an interface to data that does not exist in SharePoint itself. This external data can be stored in the above time recording database, for example. The Business Connectivity Services standard connector for this database can be used to access this data.

Integration of external data

With Business Connectivity Services (BCS), Quam® can also connect to data made available through a Web service. It can also connect to data published as an OData source or to other types of external data. In Business Connectivity Services, standard or custom connectors can be used. The connectors form the communication bridge between SharePoint and the external system from which the external data is hosted.

BCS provides mechanisms that significantly facilitate integration tasks for experienced users, developers, and IT professionals:

  • Disclose external data from enterprise applications, Web services, and OData services to SharePoint,

  • Provide typical Office behaviors (such as contacts, tasks, and appointments) and functions for external data and services,

  • Provide data interaction capabilities, including SharePoint Server writeback capabilities to the underlying external system data and business objects.

In Quam®, external data can be presented in different ways using SharePoint capabilities. Most often, the data is presented in an external list that represents, for example, cost or time records. The external lists have a similar appearance to normal SharePoint lists - with the exception that only external data can be displayed in the lists. If external data is to be integrated with other data in a list or library, you can use a column for external data in existing lists. An external data column is a column type that you can create and add to a SharePoint list.

SharePoint includes business data web parts for displaying and interacting with external data and SharePoint apps that can also use external data.
